SGA MEETING MINUTES – November 14, 2012

President – Shikha Nigam
• Reminders:
o Any fund requests need to submitted by next week
o Clubs, please send in the requested information to Dr. Golden Jackson by next week
o Class representatives please reiterate Facebook Marketplace to your classes
• Reopening topic and subject of clinical planning – I would like to know what people have come back with and what classes are saying. With such a high Step 1 pass rate, the administration wants to reduce the time between getting scores and being in the hospital. I have spoken to clinical research fellows who have gone through the process and they believe it’s a good idea. Brandon, please work on a time to discuss this with your class and get their feedback.
o Jarin: Leave it the way it is
o Amy: Weighted lottery system – whereby it’s still a lottery but people who have higher class rankings have a higher chance of being picked.
• Every semester, we fund a charity – please send in a paragraph by next week for your charity of choice that you feel is deserving of $750. One idea so far is the Movember campaign. The money can be split up, but I believe it would have a greater impact for one place.
• Dr. Golden Jackson and I met with a local group of volleyball players. They are looking for tutoring help and college planning. Their players range from neighbourhood kids to mature adults and some of the children have been pre-streamed into a non-collegiate track, so they are not getting the best education or well rounded education. We hope to work with them and empower them to get their GED, etc. We would need volunteers for these services such as tutoring. Additionally, if anyone is interested in volleyball, they have open nights on Fridays and are looking for players of all talents. They’re located not too far from Cost-U-Less and we will be coming up with a flyer with their information soon.
• There are 3 candidates coming to AUC auditioning for Bruce Kaplan’s current position. This position overlooks the academic side of semesters 1-9.5. While not everybody will be meeting with them, please send in your suggestions and ideas that we can bring up with them in a smaller setting.
• The “Journal Club” will be held on Friday November 16 in the MPR at 4pm. It will be a student-led discussion and faculty will be present to help guide the discussion. Please spread the word. Depending on the level of interest it may move toward a more social setting and possibly off campus discussion.
• Drum line kids will be coming Saturday November 17th. We will be doing an information session with them regarding sex ed, nutrition and exercise. If anyone else is interested in putting a segment together, please see me or email Victoria from LMSA.

Vice President – Gevork Tatarian
• Last meeting we voted on SEPC – we need to vote again for an alternative.

Secretary – Thuy Nguyen

• SGA funds stand at over $2000

Historian – Adam Stivala
• We’re half way through “Movember” and have raised over $2000, with 65 participants on our AUC team. The Movember company has also sent us some cool stuff and we have limited edition prizes for the party. We will also be hanging up some posters around the school.

Dr. Golden Jackson: SGA Faculty Advisor
• Regarding the volleyball group, they have been together for 20 years and what they want to do is groom young students to go to college with sports being one pathway. They have had 1 or 2 students accepted by US teams. So, they would like to build on that and be more successful.

Dr. Jarosinski: Dean of Student Affairs
• Please give us your opinion via the Student Satisfaction Survey. From the last survey, students reported they were least satisfied with the health insurance and health care. Therefore, we wanted to differentiate that some more and have created a separate survey to address these concerns.
• The issue with flu shots has been brought up with Dr. Deketh and administration. Due to the light number of flu shot requests it will not be funded for students. We are still in communication about getting shots for students before clerkships.

Dr. Dale Van Wormer Student Judiciary Committee (VWJC)

Christine Hawks : January 17, 2012 2:46 pm : SJC

We are a student run organization that deals with student-to-student conflicts and infractions of the AUC Honor Code. We rely on the student body to report any unethical or unprofessional behaviors and trust that our committee will handle them appropriately. Depending on the situation, we will decide if peer mediation and/or a hearing are necessary. Confidentiality and fairness are maintained at all times and we strive to resolve any issue at hand. Our goal is to promote an environment at AUC that is not only conducive to learning, but is trustworthy, respectable, and is in accordance with the ethics and values set forth by the medical community. Members consist of students in the second to fifth semesters.
