SGA Minutes 9/7/2011

aadhar2006 : November 14, 2011 4:45 pm : NEWS, SGA, SGA Minutes

SGA MEETING MINUTES  September 7th, 2011

President – Ebi Okoro

  • Welcome back!! I hope you guys enjoyed your long break! This is the first meeting of the semester and I can’t wait to work with you guys again and also the new e-boards and class representatives.
  • Today, we are going to get volunteers for the white coat, please sign up. One proposal will be presented; Christine will be collecting your current contact info. Secretary –  Christine Cave

  • Welcome back everyone! Please fill out your name and email address so I can update the SGA roster. Thank you!

Treasurer -  Vanessa Hamlin

  • Please send your budgets in for this semester as soon as possible.

5th Semester Representatives

  • Nothing to report.

4th Semester Representatives

  • Nothing to report.

3rd Semester Representatives

  • Physiology department issues:
    • Lou: we are disappointed with the physiology department especially with the professors that are teaching the courses. Also many students find it unfair that tutors are not allowed to use the professors slides to help students. We do not understand why this is the only department that has this policy. Also, after final exams the chair of the department refused to speak to students in regards to discussing their exams. They were told that the school was in recess and to ask questions at the beginning of the Fall 2011 semester.
    • Dr. Gray: there is a more formal way of approaching this, perhaps you should speak to the course director about this. Please make a list of formal issues to present with an adequate response that you would like to see. If you could provide concrete examples that would be great and you will get a better response.
  • Also the temperature in Chertok Hall is too warm and it is uncomfortable for students. Is there a way to get the temperature adjusted?
  • Some classmates spoke with Dr. Yoshida about the final schedule and had some questions as to why exams were on Tuesday.
    • Ebi: Please have Monday or Tuesday open before buying your tickets, the final exam schedule has not been finalized.

2nd Semester Representatives

  • We also had the same concerns about the physiology department as the 3rd semester class.

1st Semester Representatives

  • Nothing to report.

Dr Kirkland – Interim Dean of Student Affairs

  • Nothing to report.

Dr. Testa- Dean of Basic Sciences

  • Tropical Storm Maria will be affecting St Maarten this weekend, the student body will be getting a series of emails from Dr. Kirkland, we are making the decision to cancel the White Coat Ceremony to ensure the safety of our students.  Due to the nature of this storm, preparations must be underway to prepare the school to be used as a shelter just as a precaution.
  • Dr. Kirkland will be sending out emails to those living in targeted areas, mostly those in Beacon Hill which has experienced serious flooding during past storms.
  • 1st semester class reps: you are in charge of informing your classmates that Dr. Kirkland  will be sending out an email asking if dorm residents are willing to house fellow students that may need a shelter. You will be provided with cots.
    • Zeel: 1st semester rep: how should we notify our classmates, and how do we get the names of those who want to volunteer to you?
      • Dr. Testa: Whatever works best for you. Just give the names to Dr. Kirkland.
  • Faculty:
    • Two faculty members have been let go: Dr. Blevins- physiology professor, Dr. Susan Atchley- Director of Community Service Affairs. We will be aggressively recruiting those positions as well as other positions that we have been trying to gain faculty for.
      • Short term plan: Dr. Gray will be attending SGA meetings until Dr. Jerald Jarosinski takes over on October 3rd. Dr. Kirkland’s last day will be this Sunday. She will continue to be a part of the AUC faculty as a visiting professor for behavioral science.
      • Dr. Shupe will be the advisor for SGA until we can find a permanent director for community service affairs. We will be hiring someone who will have experience in community service affairs as well as being able to serve a role as an academic professor.
  • There will be some people visiting us regarding facility planning: we are trying to expand the campus to accommodate the students. Ebi, can you please gather the SGA council to attend a meeting with the facility planning people next Tuesday 3:30-4:30 in the MPR.
  • Lou: questions about the physiology department:
    • Dr. Testa: please set up a meeting with me to discuss this.
  • DJ (Phi Chi): will all the groups that Dr. Atchley used to advise be covered by Dr. Shupe?
    • Dr. Testa: no, unfortunately I have not come to a conclusion for that at this time. It is fine to function without a faculty advisor.

Dr. Gray

  • Petition for CBT:
    • Viewing exams after blocks: we came up with a coaching report that students can request from the course director, which will be a common coaching report that will be available to all students. It will be an adjunct: has the correct answer for a question and what you as a student answered, you will be able to deduce what the question was based on the information.
    • Students can still request to go over portions of the examination to see the actual questions; this will be the new examination policy.
    • I have handed out a mock coaching report that will be available to all students this semester.
    • If a student requests this specialized coaching report the professor must provide it to the students.

AMSA

  • General body meeting tonight at 7pm in LH 1 pizza and soda will be provided
  • Study skills workshop: with Dr. Berisch this past Monday approximately 38 students attended.
    • Dr. Gray: can we get feed back about it? Perhaps a survey?

  • Beach BBQ was held this past Saturday along with Phi Chi and BGLAM, it went well.

  • Booking conflicts on AUCscope: please be more mindful if you are booking an event and you see that another group has an event at the sme time.
  • Met w/ Dr. Testa about Dr. Atchley since she was the advisor:
    • She still will be the liaison for community action day.
    • She will also like to still hold wine and cheese at her home.

CMDA

  • Will be having a welcome back potluck this Sunday at 7pm in the MPR.
