Who We Are
Founded March 31, 1889
Incorporated May 6, 1901
Phi Chi Medical Fraternity provides a common meeting ground for students with common interest and goals. Membership offers a wide latitude of benefits which range from an active and closely knit fraternal association with educational, personal, social and student professional relationships available throughout one’s lifetime. Student loans and insurance programs are also available.
All medical fraternities are good, serve a useful purpose, and are beneficial; one, however, is better. That is PHI CHI.
A medical fraternity provides a common meeting ground for those who have common interests and goals. With mutual endeavor and cooperative efforts, the capabilities of all are increased and more can be accomplished. In addition, the fraternal association developed between chapter members becomes a forerunner and sets a pattern for the professional relationships each member will need and seek throughout his or her entire medical career. The art of congeniality is the secret of making friends and enjoying greater popularity.
PHI CHI’S national membership offers a wide latitude of benefits which are ever present form the earliest days of membership throughout one’s medical lifetime. These range from an active and closely knit fraternal association with educational, personal, social and student-professor advantages during medical school days to important professional relationships available throughout one’s lifetime.
In size and unity there is strength and permanence; consequently, only a large and strong national organizations can provide the professional benefits of direct contacts. Starting with a residency and continuing on uninterrupted through changes of location, hospital staff appointments, partnerships or group associations, referrals through one’s years of practice and other lifetime associations.
Fraternal friendships are often like political ones – if you know the right people and have the right contacts, you can usually find it much less difficult to get what and where you want. A friend in PHI CHI is a friend indeed.
Local fraternities or clubs, however dedicated and meritorious, shine for the medical student only in their narrow and limited sphere during undergraduate days – they can offer nothing beyond the campus area. PHI CHI, with alumni located practically everywhere, offers unlimited friends anytime, anywhere, for every member throughout his or her lifetime.
It has been so – for PHI CHI – for 121 years!
PHI CHI – The Fraternity with benefits
Mission Statement
To provide a forum wherein Physicians and Students of medicine may come together, to their mutual benefit, in a brotherhood seeking the development of the higher qualities of medicine; of nobler impulses of heart; of more profound scholastic achievement; of devotion to the art and science of medicine; and of a communion of kindred hearts pledged to support each other in times of joy, as well as adversity.
Our Chapter
History: Sigma Chi Mu, the 97th chapter of the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, was founded on October 19, 2001 at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC) on St. Maarten. Thirty-six members were initiated into Sigma Chi Mu consisting of the charter class (14), the first class (19), and faculty members (3). We have delved into the community helping both the people and environment. Working with orphanages and schools, sponsoring fundraisers, donating money and supplies, as well as beach and lagoon cleanups are all common events planned every semester. Reaching out to our fellow AUC students, Sigma Chi Mu regularly plans Wine and Cheese Galas and Dodgeball Tournaments, events which offer all students the opportunity to take a break from their studies so they can gather and socialize. Every semester, Sigma Chi Mu has become stronger within both the community of St. Maarten and AUC due to the efforts of the members to make our chapter successful.

This past Saturday, Phi Chi held its Phi Chi Wine and Cheese Gala, one of the most successful events held by the student body at AUC. The gala is held every semester at the residence of Dr. Sue Atchley, with catered food from Rare, live music by Grammy-nominated Jim Spektor, and fine wine and cheese samples from around the world. The Wine and Cheese Gala is a great opportunity to connect with friends, colleagues, and AUC faculty. A silent auction was also held at the event, with proceeds going to a local charity.
Many thanks go out to Phi Chi, Honor Society, Dr. Atchley, and all those involved for putting on such a wonderful event. Special thanks goes to Nate Soon for his wonderful photos from the event.
