BGLAM: Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians, and Allies in Medicine

brimott : January 12, 2012 4:50 pm : BGLAM

We are a group of medical students, faculty, and staff, who have a firm commitment to embracing diversity on this campus, by providing resources, support, and a friendly community for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, questioning and ally medical students. We will work to foster understanding and tolerance of all sexualities, cultures, and ethnicities among our entire student body; and to support and improve LGBT-related training of our fellow students in order to improve the healthcare of our LGBT, intersex, and questioning patients.
BGLAM is a club that is on the rise and currently has over 30 active members. We have raised over $400 for the local children’s breakfast program in the last 2 semesters by holding awesome tie dye events. BGLAM plans to do a semester Drag Queen Bingo & Raffle Program to raise money for the HIV/AIDS Foundation on the island and the children’s breakfast program. BGLAM is an active group involved in Diversity Week, and educates AUC students and faculty about the the legality and social issues that the LGBTQ community faces across the world in healthcare. Our main goals are to educate everyone about the LGBTQ community through social programs and fundraising events for local charities.

Diversity isn’t just an old old wooden ship. You should join! Feel free to e-mail to ask questions or if you want to get involved!!

BGLAM-bisexuals gays lesbians and ALLIES in medicine

wwagner85 : February 24, 2011 11:56 am : BGLAM, NEWS

An integral part of BGLAM is our Allies.  There seems to be a misunderstanding of who is eligible for membership in BGLAM.  This misunderstanding became apparent to me in the days preceding the first potluck dinner/meeting BGLAM held this semester.  A fellow student and friend of mine came up to me and said, “Hey, I’d like to go to the meeting, but I don’t want people to think of me that way”.   While I tried to discourage thinking in those terms, I could see his point.   Yet at the same time I felt that allowing your behavior to be influenced by the way other people think implies that those people are correct in their belief.  Despite not being able to convince this individual to attend, the first potluck had 32 guests, and our second one had over 45.  The majority of those in attendance were not bisexual, gay or lesbian.  This is reflective of our administrative board as well.  The majority of BGLAM members are in fact straight individuals who are open-minded, free thinkers and just generally supportive of gay individuals.  They realize that gay men and women are no different from straight men and women, but that gay men and women face additional challenges because of our shared culture.

I’d like to take this moment to thank the Allies in BGLAM.  They’ve collectively stood beside us and given us strength while we work to gain acceptance and equality.   It takes guts to stand up for yourself.  But to stand up for someone else, that’s heroic.
