SGA Minutes: June 23, 2010

President – Wes Elramahi

  • Today we have Dr. Shupe with us to meet the council so that we can then move to a vote for our new co-faculty advisor.

Dr Shupe: teaches Medical Microbiology in third semester and is in her 8th year here at AUC. She has also served as part of the curriculum committee and the student promotion committee, and the various search committees. She is chairperson of Microbiology and Immunology. Outside of academic activities, Dr Shupe has been the faculty advisor for the spouse’s organization and CMDA. She is also a fitness guru teaching aerobics. Vote held- Vote passed. We would like to officially welcome Dr. Shupe to the SGA as our new Co-faculty advisor we are grateful to have her energy and enthusiasm join our organization and look forward to working with her.

  • Elections will be held for the new executive board on July 20th. Any candidates interested must pick up signature forms which will be available in Dimple’s office. The 50 signatures must be turned into Dimple by July 9th. Official campaigning will be July 13th- July 19th. There will be an elections committee headed by the Secretary of the SGA and will include the president and representatives from each class to oversee the elections process. The representative will be Gee, Alex, Benji, Kwasi and Jeff.
  • During the Crime symposium last week students expressed concerns that AUC should come forward and do something pro-active with respect to the security of students. Dr. Testa spoke with MEAS about getting more security that are able to take more action and I will have an update as soon as more information is available.
  • The Hurricane preparedness committee is gearing up to hold an informative and crucial town hall meeting to address what to do in the event of a hurricane emergency. Dr. Atchley will be scheduling a town hall meeting with more details to follow but at this time I’d like to get the input of the council in order to develop a more detailed agenda to make sure the session is as productive as possible. We will compile your feedback and I look forward to seeing all the students at AUC in attendance. If you can’t comfortably answer “what do I do in the event of hurricane?” then it is crucial you attend the upcoming meeting in order to be better prepared in the event of an emergency. We have had numerous students with past emergency medical training who have come forward and volunteered to be members of the secondary response team. Thank you to all those who have answered the call for help.
  • We only have 4 meetings remaining in the semester. If there are any proposals prior to the beginning of next semester for events or new ideas please prepare those and take advantage of the resources currently available to impart a positive difference for AUC.

Dr Atchley – Chair of Community Service

  • Welcome to Dr. Cindy Stroschein our new Interim Dean of Student Affairs, I am looking forward to working with you and I know it will be great.
  • Dr Testa and I are birthing a new program called “Beyond Basic Sciences” this week we have Dr. Antonella Mora who is an AUC graduate practicing in Toronto. She will be speaking on June 30th and at the Dean’s list reception. Later on in the semester we will have Dr.Nancy Connelly July 22nd. We are also working on proposing a budget to Mr Tien where we might be able to fly down our guest speakers.
  • With regards to the crime situation we are trying to put together a student group to discuss the situation at hand and come up with ideas that are free of cost. The school agrees that the students should not have to pay for their own safety but they are not sure what steps need to be taken or how much it will cost.

Dr. Stroschein – Interim Assistant Dean of Student Affairs

  • There was a discussion at the Dean’s meeting to change the exam review period to one week instead of two. Students prefer two weeks due to scheduling conflicts with other classes and ICM. Also there are some classes which release the grades at the end of the first week leaving very little time for students unable to make it to the official review session to look at their exams. The consensus is that students would prefer two weeks to review exams.
